Wednesday, June 11, 2008 • Posted June 11, 2008

Six students and four sponsors from Grace Christian School attended the Christian Schools Finals Competition at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa May 18 through May 23. The university hosted over 300 students from across the United States, Mexico, and Central and South America. Students in seventh through twelfth grades were eligible to compete in various categories of academics, fine arts, and athletics, but each school could enter only one student or team per event. The students from Grace Christian School represented Mason admirably, coming home with the overall award for the most points scored per capita for a school. In recognition of the school’s achievement, ORU granted the school a 4-year tuition free scholarship to ORU to award to a student of its choice.

In addition to competitive events, the students enjoyed some dynamic worship services and excellent Biblical teachings from Oral Roberts University professors. Sponsors accompanying the students were Principal John Burges, Karen Jennings, and Ray and Crystal Lyons.

The students are extremely grateful to all who helped them attend the competition. Their family and friends of Mason who supported their cookie dough and dessert fundraiser allowed them to attend the competition in spite of escalating fuel costs. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Carruth and Gay Renfroe were instrumental in building and decorating the puppet stage, as well as training the puppet team. Lisa Rietz and Dr. Brian Pierce of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the Mason Wildlife Management Area, and Jerry Gordon provided facilities, guidance, and support for the science project. Without the support of these individuals, parents, teachers, and sponsors, the students could not have achieved their goals.
