Wednesday, February 23, 2011 • Posted February 23, 2011

Seeking to provide full-time local treatment for those suffering from digestive tract disorders, Hill Country Memorial (HCM) welcomes gastroenterologist Lindy T. Rachal, MD, FACP, to the HCM medical staff. His practice, Hill Country Gastroenterology, is located in the Perry Feller Professional Building, at 205 W. Windcrest St., Ste. 100.

Dr. Rachal has more than 20 years of experience in all aspects of gastroenterology care, including colonoscopy screenings for colorectal cancer prevention with an emphasis on older individuals and patients with coexisting medical problems. Additionally, Rachal specializes in upper and lower endoscopy, reflux disease and swallowing disorders, inflammatory bowel disease and colitis, chronic abdominal pain, irritable bowel syndrome, gastric disease and peptic ulcers, liver and gallbladder disease.

"One area I would like to specifically highlight is reflux disease," he said. "It’s something that many suffer from, and there are effective options in treating the disease."

Actively involved in a number of physician leadership roles throughout his career, Dr. Rachal practiced at Houston’s Texas Medical Center, where he held a number of prominent positions, including president of the Medical Staff at Vencor Hospital, Executive Committee member at Memorial Herman Hospital Medical Center and chairman of Quality Assurance at that institution.

He holds double board certification in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology and has been honored with a Fellowship from the American College of Physicians (FACP). Rachal is also board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.

HCM Chief Medical Officer Jim Partin, MD, said Dr. Rachal’s admission reflects the rigorous requirements involved in becoming a member of the HCM medical staff, emphasizing the importance of this distinction. "We have a robust credentialing process for a physician to be approved, and we are constantly advancing it with a goal of providing the best care possible for Hill Country patients," he said. "Our due diligence in this area is a strong indicator to the public of a doctor’s standing in the medical community and the standards by which he or she practices."

Dr. Partin said gastroenterology services have historically been provided in Fredericksburg four days a week by the Gastroenterology Clinic of San Antonio. Visiting gastroenterologists from the clinic include: Christopher A. Fincke, MD; Russell D. Havranek, MD; Charles W. Randall, MD; and David L. Stump, MD. Dr. Partin thanked the clinic physicians for their care. "We are grateful for their dedication to our patients," he said.

With a long-term love of the Texas Hill Country, both as an outdoorsman and as a history buff, Dr. Rachal is thankful to be in Fredericksburg. "My wife, Karen, and I have visited the area throughout the years, and we’re excited to be here. We’re looking forward to enjoying the community," he said. "I’m honored to care for patients in this area."
