Wednesday, February 23, 2011 • Posted February 23, 2011

The Great Castell Kayak Race is embarking on the 9th annual event to raise funds for Chemo Sabe Org, a 501-c3 and regional cancer support foundation. The race date is June 4th, 2011, starting at the Llano River RV Park on Highway 87 North. Start time is at 9 AM and features a 12 mile survivor-style paddle down the lovely Llano River. The paddle will highlight the skills and stamina of all paddlers, both family-recreational and our dedicated racers, to conquer the challenge of the race course. This race brings in people of all ages from 6 to 80! The purpose of the race is to have fun, raise funds, and be educated about the Llano River beauty and resources.

How can a Race go to School? This year the race is being produced by the Expedition School of Austin Texas, they are experts in medical water safety, outdoor and wilderness expeditions and race organization; they work with most of the other big water races in Texas. Their mission statement is: "At the Expedition School, our goal is to encourage, educate and expand the horizons of our clients and students. Our philosophy is simple... A soul that is eager to explore and learn should be nurtured with adventure and education". Due to the overwhelming response and growth of the race, the board members decided to recruit some extra help! The Great Castell Kayak Race tis the best attended kayak race in Texas as of last year, and it all starts in Mason County Texas, home of the Texas Topaz.

This year, as usual, the race entry fee will include free camping for one night per racer, a 2011 tee shirt, bandanna-map, drinks, snacks, and goodie bag. Part of the race goal is the Llano River clean-up, helped along by LCRA trash bags. On Friday night June 3rd, there will be a musical event at the RV Park at 37 Keller-Vellino Rd. with a Finish Line Festival at RiverSounds in Castell, June 4th under the big oak trees. The entertainment will be announced as details become known. Texas Songwriters in the Round is the featured Chemo Sabe musical partner as they distribute brochures and donate time to perform for persons in Chemotherapy or cancer centers across Texas.
