The Mason Punchers traveled to Kenedy High School to take on the Santa Maria Cougars in the Area Round of the basketball playoffs.
The game would start off with both teams playing good defense as there was very little scoring in the first quarter. Santa Maria got on the board with an early three point basket while the Punchers went inside to get their points as the first quarter would end 9-5.
The second quarter started with an explosion of offense by Mason as they posted sixteen points while the Cougars would struggle with the Punchers aggressive man defense and be held to five points in the second quarter and Mason would take a 28-10 lead into halftime.
Santa Maria fought back in the third quarter by trying to attack the basket on offense and being very aggressive with their man-to-man defense but Mason held their own and took a 38-21 lead into the final period.
In the fourth quarter the Cougars would try to shoot their way back into the game by taking ten three point shots, but the Punchers defense did not allow any wide open looks and the Cougars would miss all ten attempts. The Punchers would finish the game just like they started by attacking the basket and scoring all of their fourteen fourth quarter points inside the paint to win the game 52-34.
The Punchers' next game will be the Regional Quarterfinal match up against the Falls City Beavers on Wednesday March 2nd at 6:30 p.m. at Dripping Springs High School. Please come out and support the Punchers as they try to advance on to the Regional Tournament.
