AROUND THE SQUARE
Wednesday, June 18, 2008 • Posted June 18, 2008

Happy Birthday to You.

Happy Birthday to You.

Happy Birthday dear Mason.

Happy Birthday to You.

And many moooooore.

Bring on the cake.

Bring on the candles.

Lotsa candles.

150 years old.

Coulda fooled me.

You don’t look a day over 50.

Except for those 100-year-old Victorian houses.

And your native sandstone buildings.

Fort Mason.

The Courthouse.

The old Jail.

Pretty much everything around the square.

Remarkable.

Historical.

Irreplaceable.

Incomparable.

Just like the people.

With founding families still living here.

And thriving.

Heck, most of ‘em live to be 150 years old themselves.

Mason.

2008.

Celebrating its sesquicentennial.

Almost sounds like the name of an Indian tribe.

Try saying that three times real fast.

Sesquicentennial sesquicentennial sesquicentennial.

Makes me thirsty.

So do these 100-degree days.

So hot, and it’s only June.

So dry, and it’s only June.

Instead of 150 candles, make that 150 ice cubes.

Bags of ice are flying out the door at NuWay and Short Stop and Weber Chevron and Town & Country.

Way back when, everybody cooled down at Mason Drugstore (where Ranchland Western Wear is today).

Root beer floats, cherry coke, ice cream sodas (with homemade ice cream).

But their 400 was the house specialty.

Chocolate milk over ice with whipped cream on top.

An oldie but a goodie.

Just like our town.

That’s Mason.
