The Mason Cowgirl softball team opened district 29-A play Tuesday night at home against the Medina Ladycats.
Medina struck early and often scoring 8 runs in the first three innings. The Cowgirls got a pair of runs in the first as Kyndal Jarl led off with a single and Alexa Menchaca singled to put runners at second and third. Star Longoria then drove in both runners on a single up the middle.
Medina’s early runs were aided largely by five Cowgirl errors. After settling down the Cowgirl defense held the Ladycats’ offense mostly in check for the rest of the game as Medina was only able to score 3 more runs. Karina Alvarez did a great job in the outfield and the solid infield play of Courtney Brown, Jarl, Menchaca and Veronica Torres kept the Cowgirls hanging around.
Trailing by 8 runs in the bottom of the 7th the Cowgirls mounted a valiant comeback effort. With 1 out Jarl singled to spark the rally. Followed by three walks and Michaela Martinez’s ground ball past the third baseman the Cowgirls had narrowed the gap to five runs. With runners on second and third Karina Alvarez singled to right field scoring 2 runs and keeping the Cowgirls alive. Bianca Jaquez reached on an error and then stole second. With 2 outs and runners on second and third Miranda Berreles was robbed of a hit on a great running back hand catch by the Ladycats second baseman.
Final score Medina 11 Mason 8. Despite the loss the Cowgirls continue to improve and showed great character in battling back. Their next game is Tuesday March 29th at home against Johnson City.
