Wednesday, April 13, 2011 • Posted April 13, 2011

Teachers and instructional assistants from Mason Elementary presented a workshop called “Peace, Love, Comprehension, and Rti” on February 19th at the 9th Annual Literacy Conference. The Literacy Conference was held at Region XV Service Center in San Angelo and was conducted in partnership between Angelo State and ESC Region XV. Teachers from Mason Elementary demonstrated the use of the following seven comprehension strategies used in reading classes: Metacognition – thinking about your thinking, Schema – background knowledge, Inference, Asking Questions, Determining Importance, Visualizing, and Synthesizing. Teachers taught these lessons in their classrooms all using the book Grandpa Takes Me to the Moon by Timothy Gaffney. Teachers demonstrated during the conference the successful lessons taught to students in kindergarten through fourth grades. If your organization is interested in learning about these strategies to increase comprehension that Mason Elementary is using, please contact the elementary principal, Mrs. Tammy Parrish at 325-347-1122.
