The Mason High School Puncher Band brought home their second consecutive "Sweepstakes" trophy after competing April 14th at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Region 7 UIL Concert and Sightreading contest held in the Llano High School auditorium.
The Puncher Band received First Division ratings in both Concert and Sightreading from all six judges. This, is combination with the first division received at UIL Marching contest gave the band the highest UIL award available to bands in Texas: the "Sweepstakes" Award. The band, under the direction of Head Director Pat Ruiz, performed "March of the Grand High Poobah" by Holsinger, "A Song of Hope" by Swearingen, and "Sparks" by Balmages. The UIL judges were very complimentary, James Snider, from San Antonio East Central stated, "best band I have heard today!"
The Mason Junior High Band, also under the direction of Band Director Pat Ruiz, received First Division (superior) ratings in Sightreading and Second Division (excellent) ratings in Concert. Their performance included "Guardian of Liberty March" by Murtha, "Pinnacle" by Grice and "Serengeti Dreams" by Smith. The Puncher Band is assisted by John Tapley.
The Mason ISD Band Program will end a very successful year with the annual Band Banquet/Concert on May 19 at 6pm in the Mason ISD Cafeteria. Everyone is invited to attend. Call Mr. Ruiz or Mr. Tapley at the Mason HS Bandhall for more information.
