Each year in May throughout the U.S.A., veterans organizations like The American Legion Fort Mason Post 285 place flags on the graves of deceased veterans, to honor their memories and the legacy of their brave defense of our beloved country. This tradition of decorating the graves of fallen soldiers began with Southern women who decorated the graves of Confederate soldiers even before the end of the Civil War.
With the help of its members, the Ladies Auxiliary and volunteers, Fort Mason Post 285 places more than 750 American flags in 25 plus cemeteries scattered throughout Mason County. These flags are purchased by the local American Legion Post and generally, funding is not a problem. However, this year, the Post is asking for donations to help offset the cost of cemetery flags and other expenses associated with the program.
Donations will be deeply appreciated and can be mailed to The American Legion, PO Box 314, Mason, TX 76856, or, can be made at the Mason National Bank. For more information on The American Legion, please feel free to call Lawrence Spell, 429-6224, or, Mike Shanley, 347-9016. For God & Country!
