Bong… bong… bong… bong… bong… bong.Six in the morning.So says the Courthouse clock.Never shy about telling time.The town ruffles its feathers.A rooster crows in the distance.Every bird in town starts to sing. Next thing you know, it’s almost eight.Seven-fifty (7:50) to be exact.The roar of traffic up El Paso (aka FM 1871) tells us so.Those final 10 minutes to get to school intensifies.Zoom…zoom…zoom.Around the bend onto Avenue F.And then it stops.The eight a.m. hush.No cars.No noise.Everyone made it on time.All’s right with the world.Onward into the day.Oliver Grote opens up early at Country Collectibles.Now the banks are opening.Must be 9 o’clock.People coming and going.Next thing you know, it’s 9:30.Suzanne Bjork props open the door to Hinckley’s Country Store.Brenda Durst sweeps in front of Benjie’s Books & Gifts.Michelle Ingracia waters the potted flowers in front of First Mason Title Company and Law Offices of Jack Lee. Mason.Open for business.Bobbie McMillan from Commercial Bank walks by on her way to lunch at Square Plate.That means it’s exactly 11:30.Bong… (times 12).High noon.Time for dinner (aka lunch).All the law offices and title companies close for one hour.You can count on it.You’ll know when it’s 2 o’clock.Sam from Sam’s Antiques gets his afternoon drink from PJ’s.Then four o’clock.School’s out.Kids stream into PJs for ice cream.5 p.m.Traffic picks up.The day winds down.Business closes for the day.Bong…bong…bong…bong…bong…bong...And all is well.Time will tell.That’s Mason.Renee Walker is an author, poet, and real estate broker on the square.
