Puncher Baseball - Bi-District Champions
Wednesday, May 11, 2011 • Posted May 11, 2011

Traveling to Bandera Friday night, the Puncher were looking for a different outcome from the trip last Spring when they lost in the Regional Quarterfinals to LaPryor. The Punchers were going to have to beat the Charlotte Trojans, who were second in their district, to continue in the play-offs. Chance Stockbridge started off the first inning with a base hit. Due to his base stealing quickness, the Charlotte pitcher kept a close eye on him, but Chance was able to steal second base. Unfortunately, when sliding into base, he sprained his ankle. Being tough, Chance tried to walk it off and stay in the game. Winston Trip put down a nice sacrifice bunt that moved Chance to third. With Austin Trip’s hit down third base line, the Trojans were able to tag Chance out and the top of the first ended with no score by the Punchers. Dillon Estes came to the mound to face the Trojans in the bottom of the first. With one strike out, a good play by chance, and a nice throw down by Winston to catch the runner trying to steal second base, Charlotte was also unable to score in the first. In the second inning, even though Kolby Yonker and Drigo Martinez had nice back to back hits, there was again no score. Estes came out in the second with the first Charlotte batter hitting a grounder to Chance at Short Stop who made a good throw to Kolby at first. The next 2 batters then struck out. End of the second inning still no score.Top of the third, Mason’s bats start to show a little life. Winston got a base hit, followed by a hit by Austin. Winston was able to get to third on an overthrow and came home on a base hit by Dillon. That was all the scoring the punchers could get that inning. The first batter for Charlotte hit the ball to the center field fence. Bodie Adams came up with the ball and threw it to Andy Duarte, his cut off man, who then fired the ball to Winston at home. The runner was running hard to get an in the park homerun, but Winston caught the ball and tagged him out trying to slide in. The Trojans could not get anything more going in the inning. The fourth inning was quiet for the Punchers with no runs. The Trojans put runners on the bases but were unable to score. An exciting fifth inning started with Chance getting on by speeding to first while the third baseman couldn’t get a handle on the ball. Winston laid down a successful bunt. With Chance and Winston on base, Austin hit a triple to right field which allowed Chance and Winston to score. Dillon hit a single scoring Austin. The bottom of the fifth, Dillon was great on the mound with a strike out, throwing the next batter out at first, then got the next batter to hit the ball in the air with a great catch by Andy. The only scoring in the sixth was by the Trojans scoring one run. Mason goes into the top of the seventh ahead 4-1. Only one more inning to go. Winston leads off with a base hit followed by one from Austin. Dillon comes to the plate with a triple to right scoring Winston and Austin. Mason has 6 and only 3 outs from winning. Dillon faces the first 2 batters which get on base. Austin comes in to the game with 2 on. The first batter hits the ball to Andy who throws him out at first. One run scores. One Out. The next batter hits the ball for a double but makes it home on an error. Two more runs score. The next batter hits the ball to Dillon at third who throws him out at first. Two outs. Next is the Senior pitcher, with 2 strikes and one ball, Austin pitches the ball and the batter swings and misses! MASON IS BI-DISTRICT CHAMP! The Area Championship will be played again in Bandera. This will be a 3 game series. The first game will be Friday night at 7. The second will be Saturday at 3. If there is a need for game 3, it will be immediately following. Port Aransas won their district and had a bye the first round. This will be a hard battle, but with the coaches and players doing their part and the fans showing up to cheer them on, there is no telling what this team can do. See you there! GO PUNCHERS.
