School Day at Fort Mason

On Friday, May 20th, some 200 local students in grades three through six, plus a high school class, will participate in an educational day at Fort Mason. From noon to 3:00 p.m., reenactors from Fort McKavett and Fort Concho will share their stories of fort life. Master blacksmith, James Honig, of Hondo, with his own anvil and forge, demonstrates the essential work of a smithy.Mr. Bob Bluthardt, director of Fort Concho, shows a group of students marching maneuvers.A laundress gets students to help wash clothes.Fort McKavett group teaches games children played during the 1850s, and social studies teacher, Sherry Krutzenberger, demonstrates some hand weaving.Members of the Fort Committee and Mason County Historical Society will be docents and leaders of the various groups.
