The Mason Lions Club met Tuesday, June 14th, for its regular weekly luncheon meeting. There were 32 members and three visitors in attendance. Lion Charles Pluenneke was responsible for the program and introduced three representatives from the Texas Forest Service who spoke about the group's dual roles: monitoring and managing the state's forest assets; and, responding to fire incidents across Texas.They mentioned that wildfires this year have burned 2.9 million acres, which is approaching the total of 2009 and 2010 combined. Each speaker stressed the importance of cooperation between professional and volunteer firefighters. There are currently burn bans in force for 204 of Texas' 254 counties.The club's next meeting will be held Tuesday, June 21st, at noon at Zavala's. The Mason Lions has an ongoing program to recycle used eyeglasses to people who need them. Used eyeglasses may be given to any Lion or left in collection boxes at any of the local banks. Also, please contact any Mason Lion if you know of anyone in our community unable to afford appropriate eye care.
