The annual membership meeting of the Mason County Historical Society will be held Tuesday, August 23, in the high school cafeteria, at 7:00 p.m. The meeting features a talk by Betty Dooley Awbrey, author of Why Stop? A Guide to Texas Historical Roadside Markers. Many of you carry this book with you. It is a delight to have your traveling companion find and read aloud the information on those markers you are zipping past at 70 miles per hour. It is also a great way to dip into our state’s rich history from an armchair in your living room.Betty Awbrey is a retired educator from San Antonio. She updates and expands each new edition. Her father, Claude Dooley, compiled the original more than 25 years ago. Betty began sharing the job of working on new editions, and has continued since his death some years ago. The annual membership meeting of the Historical Society is held in August every year. The business of the meeting includes the election of new officers and board members. The annual report will be a short Power Point slide show with photos of the society’s activities during the past year. Everyone is invited to attend the meeting and hear this year’s speaker, Betty Awbrey, author of Why Stop?
