Who knew Mason county was such a potential hotbed of fundamentalist Islamic threat? Reading the recent front page article relating to a visit here by an expert on the subject, one can only assume this must be the case. I smell a witch hunt wrapped in the flag. I expect there might be people here in Mason of German origin that remember feeling a bit uncomfortable during WWII. I heard stories from my father of incidences of persecution in Menard during this time. Human nature never changes. Only the target for persecution changes race/nationality/religion depending on the times. And always tweaked a bit by specific circumstances to assure us that this time we are indeed absolutely right in our fear. I’m pretty sure sowing seeds of paranoia never helped any legitimate cause. Unless there’s perhaps a financial incentive at work? Attendees to this event at the Eckert Center should expect to get the hard sell. Fear mongering is an ad man’s dream come true. Works every single time. But like the man says, it’s all just my opinion.
