VFW Post 8554 News

The August quarterly meeting of district 13 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, which Mason post 8554 is a member, was held in Fredericksburg on the 14 th of august. Guest speaker for the event was Tammy Elliot, Texas Veterans Commision service officer for Gillespie county. She gave a very informative talk on the new changes in Veterans benefits. With attention to surviving spouses benefits and health care for veterans.The new Jr. Vice Commander for the state of Texas, Silvia Sanchez, was also in attendance. She spoke on new post inspection policy. Said that every post in the State can expect a visit from the IRS this year. And gave tips on things that need to be on hand when the IRS arrives.On the local post news we will be selling raffle tickets at Super S this Saturday morning on the shotgun. The drawing will be held at the post on the 24th of September. The funds from the raffle will be used to help veterans , including active duty veterans and their families. So if you do not have a ticket come by and see us.The VFW national convention will be held in San Antinio this year. It kicks off on the 28th of August. And, officer elections will be held on the 1st of September. As post commander, I plan to attend. Never been to a national event before so it will be a new experience for me. Hope to be able to report that some new and promising things will come from this event.Again, we encourage all qualified veterans to come and join our post. If you do not know if you qualify come on down anyway and visit. The regular monthly meetings are held on the 3rd Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion Post on Post Hill street located behind the jail. We are in the planning stage for this year's post events. We can always use new, fresh ideas.
