Dolores Costello Barrymore, Gretta Garbo, Judy Garland, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Meg Ryan, and the 1.6 million bats at the Eckert James River Bat Cave—What do all of these have in common? You got it…they are all female actresses, movie stars, gals of the bright lights of Hollywood.
Our tiny entertainers at the Eckert James River Bat Cave Preserve put on quite a performance for the Fox TV crew from Dallas/Fort Worth that came out to film the show last week. This segment will be aired on Fox stations on Sunday, July 6th. Masonites can catch that on the Austin Fox station. Be sure to be tuned in!
Reporter Richard Ray and his camera man, Rick Smith, got their dollar’s worth when they began to film. Even before the ladies started their nightly exit from the cave, the television crew was being delighted by the Preserve’s camera hog, Miss Hiss.
Miss Hiss is our resident Texas whip snake and she is totally not going to be outdone by the bats…even if she has to eat each and every one! She tried several times to lower the bat count, but she was too busy trying to see if the “big camera” was rolling to succeed.
I used quotes from famous people last week in my report, but I have a few that I just have to include in this. Richard Ray, with his electrifying enthusiasm, reminded me of a famous movie quote. It was taken from the movie ‘Forest Gump’…. “My Mama always said, “Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re gonna get.” I think that Fox News was more than impressed with what they got!
The whole week has been quite spectacular. The bats are leaving on the first emergence at a minute or two after six o’clock. As I pulled up to open the gate, there was always someone there ready to view this exciting exhibition. I don’t know if it is the unsettled weather, but the bats are ending their emergences by about 8 o’clock. Don’t wait until dusk to come. Try to be there right at six o’clock so that you don’t miss any of the show.
We have had visitors from all over; Houston, Fredericksburg, Dallas/Fort Worth, Red Oak, Galveston, Bentonville, AK., Millville, NJ., Durango, CO., Whitehouse, San Antonio, Allen, Weatherford, San Angelo, Millsap, Toledo, OH., College Station, El Paso, Lubbock, Charlotte, NC., Newton, KS., Kenosha, WI., Baytown, Iron City, GA., Columbia, SC., Waco, Kerrville, Kingsport, TN., Colorado Springs, CO., and many, many more areas.
Everyone who has been to view this most breathtaking occurrence has said the same thing.….”I’ll be back..!” It just so happens that this line is the number one movie quote of all time from, ”The Terminator.. 1984“. I have never seen this movie, but I don’t think that Arnold S. was saying this about the Eckert James River Bat Cave Preserve. I have no doubt that he will freely use this favorite line if he ever chooses to visit. Meanwhile, he can take a tip from those who use this quote and hurry out to join us in our silent ovation to the greatest actresses that movie land ever filmed!
Show time is 6-9 p.m. each Thursday-Sunday evening. Ticket prices are $5.00 for persons 6 years of age and up. We have no concession stand, but you won’t need one anyway, because your jaw will drop when the show begins and will stay that way to the very end! LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!!!!……………..
