Goodbye, August. Here, we’ll get the door.Hurry up.Get going. But crossing the county line ain’t good enough.Actually, we’d like to drop kick you clean out of Texas. So we’ll drive you to the airport.Send you somewhere up north.Be sure and take the heat with you.And your drouth. Those folks way up yonder could use both.Glad you’re going.Finally.No hard feelings. It’s nothing personal.Even though you did wear out your welcome.Your ceaseless sweltering stay. One thing’s for sure.Never trust Farmer’s Almanac again. Not one word about this epic drouth.Or these 70+ days of 100 degrees. And hotter.Martha Draper summed it up on Friday. We were all closing up shop.Time to head home.Another day surviving oppressive heat. And no rain. With no relief in sight. She locked the door to Currey’s Fabrics.Turned and said:“We’re all dead.”Just like that. And there was nothin’ else to say.Because we are. We’re all give out.Ranchers and their cattle.Hay growers.Fence builders.Welders.Well drillers.Roofers.Carpenters.Painters.Plumbers.A/C people.Grass.Trees.Deer.Birds.Wildlife.The dog.The cat.And the rest of us.You win, August. Now git. That’s Mason.
