Punchers Rack Up Second Win of 2011 Season
Wednesday, September 7, 2011 • Posted September 7, 2011

After handily defeating Harper to start the 2011 season, the Mason Punchers met up with old rival, Junction, last weekend for their first outing at home. I would be Mason's second decisive victory of the season as they defeated the Eagles 54-12.As was the case with the Harper game a week earlier, the Punchers still had some problems with penalties. Just as in the Harper game, a number of scoring runs were called back by officials; but, the Punchers refused to let their errors dominate the game. They scored 24 points in the first half, 30 in the second, and the Eagles were held scoreless until Mason's second and third string took over in the fourth quarter.Coach Kade Burns noted that the Punchers ",,,, are learning to come out and play for 48 minutes." He also congratulated his players for the dedicated effort they have been making to get better, and to prepare for each game. "We have quite a bit of depth," Burns said, "and can play lots of kids, which is good."As Mason looks ahead to Comfort, Burns acknowledges that the situation is very different from the first two outings for the Punchers."They are the best team we have seen thus far; and, we must prepare well and do things correctly on Friday night to give ourselves a chance to win."David Mora was back in form for the Punchers last Friday, carrying the ball for 125 yards, and two touchdowns. Raul Silgera, who proved himself during the Harper matchup, racked up 47 yards and a touchdown of his own. Chance Stockbridge and Woody Watson contributed a touchdown each, and even young Elliot Bibb racked up a touchdown for the Punchers, proving that Mason's young talent will be able to contribute to the team's success. Added to the impressive showing was quarterback Austin Trip's passing game, which added 116 yards to Mason's total for the night.Scoring by Quarter:First Quarter scoring:4:39 left Watson 22 yard pass from Trip (Schmidt PAT)1:18 Mora 2 yd TD run (Bad snap on PAT)Second Quarter:7:56 Mora 57 yd TD run (PAT pass trip to Watson 2 pts)0:00 Schmidt 38 yard field goalThird Quarter:11:48 Stockbridge 70 yd kickoff return (PAT Schmidt)8:07 Stockbridge 81 yard pass from Trip (Pat Schmidt)5:13 Silguera 46 yd TD run (PAT Schmidt)Fourth Quarter:11:49 E. The Puncher faithful are encouraged to make the short trip to Comfort on Friday night to cheer on our boys.
