The Punchers head into their open week with three notches in the belts after downing the Comfort Bobcats last Friday, 48-24.The Comfort team never backed off from their challenge of the Punchers during Friday's game in Comfort, and their score reflects the talent they brought to the game. Fortunately for Mason fans, the Punchers were up to the challenge and came home victorious.In the first quarter, David Mora scored early on a 45 yard run, then Rio Schmidt added the kick for a score of 7-0.With five minutes left in the first quarter, Comfort's Poerner carried in the run after a 10-yard pass from Carlos, Falcon kicked, and the score was 7-7.The rest of the first quarter would be Mason's, and David Mora's. Mora made a short 5-yard run for the score, but wowed the crowd with a 77-yard run that included a feint, pause and shoot move that left Comfort tripping over their own feet. Schmidt kicked the extra points on both, and at the end of the first quarter the score was 21-7.In the second quarter, Comfort's Nix ran in the ball for score, followed by Falcon's kick and the score was 21-14. Shortly after, Falcon booted in an amazing 34-yard field goal, and the score was 21-17.But, Mora would end the first half with a final run for score, supported by buddy Rio Schmidt's kick, and the half time score would be 28-17.In the second half, both teams would battle for most of the third quarter before closing out the time with a flurry of scoring. David Mora scored again on a short run, and for once, Schmidt's kick didn't make it, and the score was 34-17. Shortly after, Comfort lost control of the ball and Mason's Austin Trip shot a 43-yard pass to Woody Watson for score, and Schmidt redeemed himself with the extra point, putting the score at 41-17.Watson scored again just before the end of the quarter to put the score at 48-17.The fourth quarter saw Coach Burns alternating in second and third string players, allowing Comfort a bit of breathing room to score one last time in the game. Their final score would put the tally at 48-24.Mason's varsity takes a breather this week. The JV schedule has been altered to move the Winter's matchup, originally scheduled for November 3, to this Thursday at 7:15 p.m. The JV will play in Puncher Stadium. Next week, the Punchers will take on Ingram in an out of town game.
