Butterflies are free. And freely flying around.Lots and lots of ‘em.The beautiful monarch.Multitudes of them in a tree by the Courthouse.Right outside Judge Bearden’s window. An early morning burst of color.Flapping, flitting Technicolor. And branches covered with golden leaves.Leaves that leave the tree.Silently.Or hold fast.Open-close, open-close.Without a sound.Hush.Then an effortless lift-off.A kaleidoscope in mid-air.Hundreds and hundreds of them.Floating.So quiet. So brief.Gone the next day.Like a dreamOr the memory of a dream. One magical moment of a morning. And then off to Mexico.Migrated away.Alas.Everything changes. Whatever comes, comes.New season, new people, new business.Jennifer Munsell opened Sassy Chique.Southern Britches can be found on the other side of the square. In the Hemphill Insurance building. That makes two more places in town to buy women’s clothing.Including The Thing Is, Ranchland Western Wear, and Wildflowers. And whatever goes, goes.Oliver Grote left Country Collectibles. He migrated to the Big Collector in the Sky.Hard to believe he didn’t take some of that stuff with him.Nope.There’s no fighting the pull.Just as the monarchs can’t help but head south for the winter.Destined to follow nature’s call.So we, too, come and go. Flit and fly.Or sit with wings closed tight.Head north.Head south.Stay put.Survive.Or better yet, live well. That’s Mason.
