The Punchers hit the road again this past week and traveled to Johnson City to take on the Eagles. Both teams played pretty good defense in the 1st period holding each other in check. Punchers that did a good job during this period were, Caleb Hyatt, Michael Jefferson, Slade Townsend, and James Schwertner. The Eagles put together a nice drive from the Puncher 47 yard line late in the 2nd period and scored, but the Punchers held them on the point after. With a little more than three minutes into the 3rd period Johnson City scored again on the sweep, but again the PAT failed. Mason struggled throughout the remainder of the 3rd period and into the 4th on offense. But with less than a minute remaining in the game, Grant Sanders connected with Brayden Waite on the screen, as he followed linemen Jose Rojo and Riley Pape and moved the ball from the Eagle 44 yard line to the 32 yard line. Sanders then hooked up with Evan Dayton on the throwback. Dayton made two good moves and broke a tackle for the score. Time expired and the Eagles gained the victory 6-12.Although we came out on the short end of this game I was very proud of how these guys kept their heads as time was running out and were able to put together a nice drive for the score. I’m not worried about these guys at all. They work hard, learn a little everyday and give their best effort in practice and on the game field. Coleman Swafford did a great job filling in for the absent Baylee Owen at linebacker, as well as Brayden Waite starting at fullback. Next week the Punchers play host to the visiting Eagles from Eldorado.
