Don Edward Metzger

Don Edward Metzger, 73, of Austin, Texas, went home to his Lord and Savior, at his home on Sunday, October 16, 2011, surrounded by family, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's.Don was born December 26, 1937, in Mason, Texas, to Clarence and Irene Metzger. He attended Mason High School where he was a member of the Mason Puncher football team, and was on the 1954 semi-state championship team. He married the love of his life, Barbara Elaine Rush, on January 7, 1961. He was an active member of the Memorial United Methodist Church of Austin since 1962. He retired from the Department of Public Safety on September 30, 1993, after over 32.5 years of service. In addition to his work, he enjoyed spending time at the family farm where he hunted, raised cattle and worked the land well into his retirement. Other pasttimes included rodeos, camping, fishing and playing cards and dominoes. He was a devoted family man, an outstanding member of the community and a true friend who would do anything he could to help.He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara; son, Randy Metzger of Louisville, Kentucky; daughter, Brenda Browning and her husband, Michael, of Round Rock; granddaughters Taylor and Taryn Stewart; sister, Lola Barr of Brownwood; brother, Melvin "MJ" Metzger and wife Ella of Mason; nephews, Allen Welch and wife Judy; Larry Welch; Scott Metzger and wife Dana and daughters Elayna, Abby and Megan; as well as his life long friends, Von and Dorothy Humphrey, Mayme McEachran and countless other relatives and friends.He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Irene Metzger; and great-granddaughters, Avery and Audrey Stewart-Browning.Visitation was Tuesday, October 18th, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Austin-Peel and Son Funeral Home, Austin, Texas. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. at the Memorial United Methodist Church, 6100 Berkman Dr., Austin.
