It has been a year since we have faced the Eagles; however, there have not been very many days that the players, coaches and fans were not focusing on the date, Friday October 28th, 2011 - The Rematch. We replayed the game in Marble Falls over and over again and felt we won the game but somehow just not on the score board. It left an empty feeling, a season for all that ended way too soon. We were proud of the Punchers and their accomplishments; but, what could our Punchers possibly learn from this loss? I think it was that they win and lose as a team. There was no finger pointing, no blaming each other - we simply just lost. Our hearts went out to our kids on the loss but what we did not know is how they would react. What would it do to the team? Would it separate them and divide them? The answer is absolutely not. It somehow got them closer, more motivated and driven to what I believe is excellence. On the Monday following the loss to Goldthwaite, the varsity players that were not part of basketball were working out hard in the weight room. When school ended and the summer began the Varsity Players were in the weight room 4-5 days a week on their own. The first day of summer, the incoming freshman class, in its entirety, were in the weight room working hard; and, later, on the field running wind sprints and working out on their own. It was awesome to see and witness. I was told early in life that the difference between greatness and excellence for an athlete is not what the athlete does when he or she is being instructed and playing in their sport; but, most of all, and more importantly, what they do when there is nobody watching. What I saw after the tough loss was that somehow the loss was going to drive this team and these players to excellence. It was evident early this season that something was different about this TEAM. It was as if the heart of the TEAM became one simultaneous beat, one focus, one goal and that is excellence! You know that Destiny is defined as a predetermined course of events thought to be beyond human power and control. I think that after the loss last year our kids took control of their Destiny and will determine their own fate. I believe there is a special Destiny with this team that awaits us all. Where will all the hard work and the drive for excellence end up this season? How far will it take us this year? That question along with some others will be answered this FRIDAY NIGHT, OCTOBER 28th, 2011, in Goldthwaite. Go Punchers!!!
