Rick Perry
Letter to the Editor

Rick Perry states he wants to abolish the Department of Energy. That is if he can remember it. The responsibilities of the DOE include, but are not limited to, the nation's nuclear weapons program, nuclear reactor production for the U.S. Navy, energy conservation, energy-related research, safety in radioactive waste disposal and domestic energy production. It also funds the Department of National Laboratories. This agency is deeply involved in strategic and tactical nuclear security and supports the economic and defensive interests of the U.S. through science and research. It's also in charge of the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Getting rid of the DOE in the wake of the on-going Fukishima disaster and an increasingly belligerent Iran is on the same level of stupidity as would have been getting rid of the U.S. Air Force in the aftermath of 9-11.So we get rid of the DOE and where does all the nuclear waste go? Who oversees our aging nuclear reactors? Who takes over keeping research alive for alternative energy? Perry's answer would most certainly be to privatize it all. Then our nuclear safety would be at the mercy of the lowest bidder -- which would undoubtedly outsource all the labor to China to increase profits.Perry also wants to pretty much hamstring the EPA therefore letting all of the U.S. suffer from unregulated exploration of our natural resources, much like what's happening in Mason County. All of the U.S. should suffer from the effects of silicosis in the air and polluted groundwater -- why limit it to just Texas. Also what's a few crumbling nuclear reactors. Just bury the nuclear waste in caves -- it's good for the economy since it creates jobs. The workers shouldn't mind their workplace being unregulated -- hey, they should be thankful they have jobs. Also let the future generations worry about how to survive in a polluted environment. Please, can't one of Perry's crony contributors offer him a job outside of any form of government?Julie Alford
