The Fredericksburg Rockhounds open their doors to the public at the Hill Country Gem & Mineral Show on Saturday and Sunday, January 21 and 22. Jewelry lovers, rock hounds, artists and designers, and geology and archaeology buffs from all over the Hill Country, Austin, and San Antonio flock to Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park in Fredericksburg every year to see what’s at the show. They pick up new materials and fresh ideas, and they renew friendships with fellow rock hounds, artists, crafts people, and scientists. People of all ages are welcome to see exhibits and demonstrations, buy raw materials and finished pieces, get help identifying their “mystery” rocks, or just stroll and browse at the show.Demonstrations at the show include faceting of gems, wire-wrapping of jewelry, and cutting and polishing of rock slabs for decorative purposes. Exhibits of fluorescent rocks, fossils, and other items promise an entertaining educational experience. Fredericksburg Rockhound club members in their yellow vests will direct visitors who need help with their unidentified specimens.Professional vendors from around the nation and Hill Country club members offer finished jewelry as well as findings and other items for making your own pieces. Geodes, fossils, exotic mineral specimens, arrowheads, and meteorites are available too. The show offers possibilities for shoppers trying to find just the right Valentine’s Day gift for their “special someones” and for those opening the eyes of their children or grandchildren to the wonder and beauty of the natural world. The Fredericksburg Rockhounds members (not just from Fredericksburg but also from Kerrville, Boerne, Pipe Creek, Bandera, Mason, Llano, San Antonio, Hondo, New Braunfels, and Canyon Lake) meet the first Monday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Golden Hub, 1009 North Lincoln in Fredericksburg. Visitors are welcome, and there is no fee for the program. Folks usually arrive an hour or so early to talk and show others their rocks, jewelry, and other items.
