The Odeon Preservation Association in Mason presents Jazz at the Odeon with Kellye Gray Saturday March 17 at 7:00 PM. Kellye was recognized as one of the Austin Chronicle’s favorite singers and jazz groups. Kellye uses her powerful yet imaginative voice like an instrument within the ensemble. A true jazz vocalist, Kellye has the soul of Aretha, the heart of Ella and the cool of Miles. That being said, Kellye Gray is one-of-a-kind with a sound that is truly her own. She remains remains an Austin favorite even while spreading her time between Austin and the west coast where she is a guest instructor at the Jazz School in Berkley California. Kellye Gray has entertained dignitaries and heads-of-state, and shared stages with an impressive constellation of international jazz, blues and R&B stars in a career spanning twenty five years. She regularly tours the U.S. and Europe, performing at festivals and concerts and nightclubs. Among the many unique experiences in her career, some special ones include singing for Dizzy Gillespie’s birthday party, opening for Ray Charles, performing at the Lincoln Center in New York and being named a member of the Texas Jazz Heritage Society. Described as “stunning scat singing, instrumental simulations and dark-toned balladry” by the Los Angeles Times, Gray creatively uses her voice as part of the ensemble. JazzTimes magazine calls her ” an impressive, indeed frighteningly vast talent.”Mostly self-taught, Gray has developed her own approach to singing jazz. Her performances highlight her strong sense of balladry with both vocal and lyrical interpretation, along with her funky sense of rhythm. Never limiting herself creatively, Gray blends scat, ballads, Latin, funk, soul, blues, solo and free styles into her shows.
