Mason Junior High Tennis In Full Swing
Wednesday, March 28, 2012 • Posted March 28, 2012

This past weekend, Mason Junior High Tennis competed in the Kerrville Middle School Team Tennis Tournament. Our team was comprised of 18 players from both 7th and 8th grade. The goal in team tennis is to be the first team to win 10 matches. Players compete in both doubles and singles. In our first match Friday afternoon, Mason faced Floresville. We jumped out to an early lead winning 6 of 7 doubles matches. In singles we were able to come away with five wins to advance to the winners side of the bracket with a score of 11-8. On Saturday morning, Mason was to face Boerne South in the semifinals at 9 a.m. This is a very good middle school team that plays year round and has some players that play Super Champs. Due to a rain/fog, we had an hour and a half delay. Even though we started later and only played a set compared to a pro-set, our players went out played with a lot of heart and energy. We ended up losing pretty soundly, but our scores in each match reflected a much different outlook. We had several matches that went 6-4, 7-5,and some at 6-3 with several games to deuce points as well. Coach Tiffany Ake and I told the kids afterward how proud we were of them for never giving up and playing Boerne as well as they did. It was then time to regroup in order to face Kerrville for 3rd and 4th place. Once again, Mason jumped out to an early lead in doubles winning that 5-2. Both Mason and Kerrville struggle a little bit in singles and all three coaches knew it would come down to that in order to medal. Mason would win four singles matches before falling to Kerrville in a close 10-9 finale. Those competing for Mason were Monaco Schmidt, Natalie Hoffman, Sara Powell, Lanie Schmidt, Justyn Tedder, Amber Hengst, Margaret Graves, Steeley Smith, Seth Hudson, Sam Dyer, Luke Gillespie, James Durst, Levi Hofmann, Nick Martin, Haddon Hudson, Garrett Bibb, Jacob Harris, and Jackson Chapman. I would like to thank Coach Tiffany Ake for all her help in coaching matches both days and Kody Criswell for keeping scores for me. Also a big thank you to all the parents that showed up Saturday to support and cheer on the kids. Mason Junior High will be competing in Copperas Cove this Saturday in their middle school invitational.
