Wednesday, April 4, 2012 • Posted April 4, 2012

The Mason Tennis Team took first place in the 44th Annual Mason Invitational Tennis Tournament here last weekend. After a third place finish last week in Fredericksburg, the Punchers and Cowgirls pulled together some strong performances in this week’s 26 team tournament. Leading the team were Matt Banner in boys singles and the girls doubles team of Traci Jordan and Margaret Lemke. Banner won the singles dropping only seven games in the tournament. This was quite a feat after dropping only four games last week in Fredericksburg. Jordan and Lemke took an impressive win over Marble Falls in the finals 6-4,6-0, but it was not their best match. The best match took place on Friday night as they defeated the previously unbeaten Bujnoch/Bujnoch sisters of Boerne 6-4,6-2. This match was played as an extra match as the sisters were not able to return on Saturday to play their semi-finals match. The Mason boys doubles teams of Price Ruffin/Coby Velez and Andy Duarte/Andrew Willis will play each other for the third place medal at a later time. Girls’ singles Kaitlyn Cavness and Emily Ellebracht both reached the quarter finals as did the sophomore girls doubles team of Claudia Canfield and Carley Chew. The mixed team of Amanda Hudson and Rio Schmidt were also quarterfinalists .Mason placed fourth In the B Division while being led by a strong girls’ performance. Katy Smith reached the quarter-finals while the girls doubles team of Brooke Falgout and Caroline Hudson teamed up for the first time this year and reached the semis before losing to a pair of Miles girls that have both been at the state tournament last year. The mixed doubles team of Kenzey Ake and Nick Dyer won the B Mixed Doubles with a strong performance over a talented Miles team. The next seven days will be a very taxing time for the tennis team as they travel to Abilene on Friday to play the semi’s and finals of the state team championships. Then we rest for a couple of days and load up and travel to Kerrville on Monday and Tuesday to play the district championships for the individual portion of UIL tennis. Mason will play Krum in the semi’s at Hardin-Simmons University starting at 8:30. Brock and Wall will play the other semi’s at Abilene HS. The finals will be played at 2:00 at Hardin-Simmons with the third place match to be played at Abilene HS. This will conclude the state team championships that got rained out on March 10th. Mason will be trying for its 10 straight state championship and its 21st since the inception of team tennis is in 1982.Mason will host the district UIL championships in Kerrville at the H.E.B. Tennis Center starting at 8:30. We hope many of you will be able to make it to Abilene and/or to Kerrville to watch some great tennis and to help cheer on these young men and women.
