Tina Hoffman has just released her first children’s picture book, Pig’s Big Adventure, based on the true tale of a baby pig that escapes from a portable petting zoo and ends up living in a high end subdivision in San Antonio.
Pig creates a lot of chaos for himself, the neighborhood and especially, the homeowner’s association when he is finally found out about. My mom called me one day and said, “There’s a little pig in my back yard!”
“What do you mean there’s a pig in your yard?” I asked. She lives in a pretty upscale neighborhood in San Antonio, the kind with wrought iron fences and such.
“Where’d it come from?”
“I don’t know, but he’s so cute!” She is not one to get too excited about stuff, but she fell in love with this pig and began feeding it out of the Pop’n Fresh pie tin she used to make pies for us in when we were little kids.
As the weeks turned into months, the story just got more and more interesting and entertaining from there.
About the same time, I was experiencing a lot of personal setbacks, disappointments and challenges. I sat down one afternoon to write.
Actually, JoAnn Berry from the 700 Club and I had just had lunch and she suggested that I gather my thoughts and write a new song. It’s usually pretty good “therapy” for me, so I did.
I sat down with a blank white sheet of paper, completely prepared to pour out my heart with new song lyrics. What came to me was something totally different.
Pig’s Big Adventure was written and it unfolded itself as a prodigal pig story of sorts. Over the next several weeks, I edited, revised and cut away parts that weren’t really necessary. It is a story about getting what we want, our way, and then having it go in a completely different direction than what we had intended or planned.Man makes his plans, but God directs our steps. Sometimes we listen, other times we don’t. We can totally step off of the path and find ourselves in a big, messy, puddle of mud! It’s a heartfelt story told in rhyme for children young and old. I’ve had grown adults cry when I’ve read it and claim to be Pig. Wait! I thought I was?
Pig learns a lot along the way about life, love and loyalty, and discovers a few other things too. Mostly, that dreams really can come true...not just for pigs, but for me and you!
The beautiful, handpainted illustrations were done by Sarah Tolleson of San Antonio who is an amazing artist with an even more amazing testimony. Sarah’s art really and truly brought the story to life in a way that absolutely captivates and engages children.
Tina Mollie Fisher, is the name that I am publishing under. It is my original birth name and the timing seems appropriate as I begin to seriously pursue my new adventures in the writing world, while still selling real estate, and working on both from home.
