For the first time in several years, Mason High School will hold a summer school session beginning Monday, June 11th and ending Thursday, July 12th. Beginning in spring 2012, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR™) replaced the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) for students in grades 3-9. At high school, grade-specific assessments will be replaced with 12 end-of-course (EOC) assessments, and we began this year with Algebra I, Geometry, Biology, World History, World Geography and English I Reading and English I Writing.
Depending on their graduation program, students will be required to meet the passing standard, Level II: Satisfactory Academic Performance (or at least achieve a predetermined minimum score), on eight to twelve STAAR EOC assessments. In order to graduate, a student must achieve a cumulative score that is at least equal to the product of the number of EOC assessments taken in that content area and a scale score that indicates satisfactory performance (Level II). For example, if the scale score range is 0–1000 and the passing standard, or satisfactory performance, is 700, a student would need to achieve a cumulative score of 2100 (3 assessments × 700 = 2100) in each of the four foundation content areas. A student must achieve a minimum score on an EOC assessment for the score to count toward his or her cumulative score. A student’s cumulative score is determined using his or her highest score on each EOC assessment within a content area.
Because of the graduation requirements for STAAR, any MHS student who did not meet the passing standard is required to attend summer school. We want to help our students meet these much more stringent graduation requirements, and we think the best way to do that, is through intensive instruction and remediation prior to the retests. Now, that our students’ results are back, we have a bit more data to work with. The retesting week begins Monday, July 9th and ends Thursday, July 12th.
School begins promptly at 8:00, and we will release at noon. Students and staff will take Fridays off, with the exception of Friday, July 6th in order to make up for the Independence Day holiday on July 4th. Questions should be directed to the Mason High School office at 325-347-1122 ext 224.
