From their company headquarters, on Landfill Road in Mason, Texas, a local small business has been attracting a significant amount of attention directed toward their innovative building products.
Mason Greenstar, Inc. recently entered into a corporate partnership agreement with Texas Tech University. The agreement is designed to enhance the commercial development of Mason Greenstar’s Greenstar BLOX ® through various avenues, including the testing of physical properties and construction applications.
Greenstar BLOX® is an energy efficient and environmentally friendly building material comprised of recycled cellulose (State of Texas newspapers, phone books, and lottery tickets), cement, and a patented blend of organic additives.
Currently, the Greenstar BLOX® mixture is used to manually manufacture a 10"x14"x4" building block, replicating a traditional adobe size, which is stacked using the same mixture for the mortar. In addition to being a FEMA certified Safety Shelter Component; the sustainable building material possesses properties such as fire, water, termite, mold, and ballistics resistance. Because of its high insulation factor (Up to 3.2 R-Value per inch) it provides tremendous savings in heating and cooling costs during the lifetime of the structure compared to conventional construction. The simplicity of the building system saves money (as much as 20% compared to conventional construction) throughout the construction process by eliminating the need for numerous building materials and crews, and eliminating the amount of waste going to a landfill from a job site.
Texas Tech University, also an equity holder in Mason Greenstar, through the Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering, recently completed a very rigorous course of testing on the properties of Greenstar BLOX®. Findings and results are expected to be published in the coming weeks, and will be available to the public through the company’s website at masongreenstar.com.
"It is a very exciting time for our young company," said Mason Greenstar President Zach Rabon, "we are finalizing the process of converting our manufacturing from manual methods to full automation; which will allow us to produce a more consistent, quality controlled product that will be eligible for building code approval through the International Code Council(ICC)." Greenstar BLOX® is approved as an ‘alternative’ building material and has been issued building permits for projects in the City of Lubbock, Texas. Mason Greenstar is currently seeking approval as an ‘alternative’ building product in several other large municipalities throughout the Southwestern United States.
In striving to further the development of Greenstar BLOX®, Mason Greenstar has been conducting business on a global level with the likes of the Kimberly Clark Corporation (KCC), The Acme Brick Company, The United States Federal Reserve System, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
Greenstar BLOX® was recently chosen by the Texas State Energy Conservation Office and The Eureka! Grant Program as one of six top emerging technologies in the State of Texas. Recognizing the top energy efficient products in Texas, The Eureka! Grants are funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, and promote innovations in green technologies designed to benefit the Texas economy.
