The competitive basketball team West Texas Elite recently ended their summer tournament tour by placing second place in the largest National Tournament in the Southern United States. Over 800 teams competed in Primetime Nationals in Dallas, Texas on July 25-29, with teams from as far away as Seattle, Washington. Prior to appearing in the Finals this year, the team made it to the Elite Eight in 2010 and the Sweet Sixteen in 2011 at Nationals.
The team was formed three years ago to give top players in the area an opportunity to compete with other top players from around the country and to sharpen their basketball skills. July is the open recruiting period for all levels of colleges and universities and coaches and recruiters from around the nation were in attendance scouting players for their programs. Original team members include Margaret Lemke of Mason and Taylor Lyckman of Menard who have been playing with West Texas Elite since the team was originally formed in early 2010. Kendra Walls of Rochelle, Emily Cullers of Comanche, Taylor Neal and Martha Jones of Brady and Tori Freeman of Lohn joined in 2011 and Brook Allen of Comanche, Alison Szabo of Merkel and Ellyn Avery of Jim Ned joined in 2012. Lynsie Blau of Menard has coached the team since its inception. The team competed in eight tournaments this summer leading up to their second place finish at Nationals.
