Mason, Texas, has been my favorite place to visit for over 25 years. I come here as often as I can to experience the small-town friendliness, shop, and sight-see. I’ve become friends with several store-owners and always enjoy visiting them, walking through town in the early mornings, and driving the country roads in the evening to enjoy the wildlife. In Mason, I feel insulated from the problems of the world and continually brag to my friends about this wonderful community.
This amazing bond with Mason was shattered last weekend when someone chose to inflict over $5,200 in damage to my truck. I had to leave it at the roadside park south of town after a blowout. I didn’t think twice about leaving it there overnight. When I arrived Sunday morning to take care of the flat, someone had broken out the windshield, the rear window, and both windows on the driver’s side. But that wasn’t enough; they inflicted deep scratches all over the vehicle. This incident has been financially and emotionally tragic. I hope I can someday regain the sense of security I once had in Mason but, for now, it has been destroyed. And I certainly hope the sheriff’s department successfully locates the vandals.
