As many of you have probably heard, the Fikes Family has sold the Northside Café. It has been almost five years, to the day, from our opening in September 2007. We want to thank the people of Mason County for their loyal support during this time. Customers have become friends. The community has helped us survive a recession and the worst drought in Texas history. Owning a small business is hard work but extremely rewarding.

We could not have done this alone. We want to especially thank Elaine and Robert O’Neal for trusting us enough to let us buy the Northside Grocery building. It holds a lot of memories for the community. We will always love Elaine’s stories of growing up in the business. We tried hard to preserve the heritage of the store. Our son Thomas and his wife Victoria bought into our idea and agreed to leave the big city and become the initial managers. Their efforts contributed to our initial success. We hired Pete Del Toro to be our lead cook before we opened and he has been a loyal employee ever since. We appreciate his work ethic and upbeat attitude. But, we want to especially thank Miguel “Mikey” Arteaga. When Thomas and Victoria left to pursue their careers in Austin we were left with a big void in the day to day management. With many years of business experience we knew hiring a manager to operate a small business, with absentee ownership, was risky at best. We could not have been more wrong. Miguel has handled his duties in a totally professional manner. He has exceeded our expectations in every way. We will always be grateful for his help. And last but not least, a special thank you to Renee Walker with Renee Walker Real Estate for putting this deal together.

The business was purchased by Mary, Burly, and Mel Polk of Mason. Mel will run the day to day operations. They tell us they plan on keeping all the good things the same but have some future plans that we think the whole community will like. We wish them all the best and hope Mason will continue to support the Northside Café.

We are looking forward to our retirement and moving to Mason to become permanent residents at last. Thank you Mason, we will see you all soon.

Don and Rika Fikes
