Haley Pluenneke, granddaughter of Barbara and Charles Pluenneke of Mason, Texas was a recipient of the Dale Hansen Football Classic academic scholarship during The Dale Hansen Football Classic held September 8, 2012.
This inaugural high school football sporting event featured a three-game exhibition that kicked off Friday, September 7, at 7:30 p.m. when the Italy Gladiators took on the Malakoff Tigers. On Saturday, September 8, the first game was the 2011 Bi-District Champion Thrall Tigers against the Florence Buffaloes. The second game, at 7:30 p.m., showcased the 2011 Division One Class 3A state finalist Alvarado Indians and the Mexia Blackcats.
While the event is designed to showcase athleticism, the classic also promotes academics, as one boy and one girl from the senior class in each of the high schools represented in the classic was awarded a $1000 scholarship based on their academic standing, moral courage, and leadership skills. Haley is a Senior at Florence High School and is the daughter of Pat and Janie Pluenneke of Liberty Hill, Texas. Haley hopes to attend Texas Tech University upon graduation.
The classic was founded in 2012 and marks the beginning of a new legacy in Texas High School Football. The classic was held at Stuart B. Lumpkins Stadium located in Waxahachie, Texas, and featured six premier football teams from around the state of Texas. The event is named for Dale Hansen, a Waxahachie resident and a award winning sportscaster with ABC’s Dallas affiliate WFAA, Channel 8. Hansen is the weeknight sports anchor and also hosts Dale Hansen’s Sports Special on Sunday nights. Each week Hansen also recognizes a Scholar-Athlete of the Week who excels both on and off the field. The title sponsors of the inaugural Dale Hansen Football Classic are: WFAA, Chick-fil-A of Waxahachie, City Credit Union, and H-E-B.
