Mason traveled up to Christoval on Friday night to take on a young Cougar team, and brought home a relatively easy 64-7 victory, maintaining their 2012 winning streak.
It didn't take long for the Punchers to show the fans that they were going to take the game seriously. Less than a full minute of play in, Elliot Bibb carried the ball for a 50-yard score, making the score 6-0 with 11:06 remaining. The point after failed, and the Punchers moved on with the game.
During the rest of the first quarter, Mason would score four more times, all delivered by Rio Schmidt. His first score occurred five minutes into the quarter. The two-point conversion failed, and the score was 12-0 with 7:05 left.
Only two minutes later, Schmidt carried the ball in on a 10-yard run to raise the numbers to 18-0. This time, the extra point was good, and it was 19-0 with 5:13 remaining.
Just over three minutes later, Rio sprinted in on a 25-yard carry raising the numbers to 25-0, then made the extra point to put it at 26-0 with 1:28 of play still left in the quarter.
Finally, with only seconds of play remaining, Schmidt dashed 41 yards for his fourth score of the night, putting the numbers at 32-0, made the extra point, and the score going into the second quarter was 33-0.
The action slowed down a bit in the second quarter as Coach Burns allowed players some diversity in their assignments, and gave some of his younger players some playing time. Five minutes into the quarter, Rio made his fifth score of the night, followed by the extra point, and the score was 40-0.
Raul Silguerro, who had already been racking up yards for the Punchers during Friday night's game, got his name on the board with a 10-yard run next. Schmidt's extra point was good, and the score was 47-0 with 4:33 left in the half.
As the seconds ticked off the clock leading up to halftime, the Punchers moved to the midpoint of the field. Schmidt booted a 42-yard field goal for the Punchers, and the score going into the half was 50-0.
In the third quarter, the Punchers would have only one score, and that occurred just over half way through the period with a final three-yard run by Leret Hemphill. Schmidt kicked the PAT and the score was 57-0 with 4:54 left to play. That would be the only score in the third quarter.
In the final quarter of play, Mason would begin the period with a nine-yard run by Austin Eckert, followed by Schmidt's PAT. The score was now 64-0 with 11:48 left in the game.
The Cougars would finally make a drive midway through the fourth quarter that would get them on the scoreboard. Whitworth finally made the final 11-yard run, and the point after was good. The score was 64-7, and that is where it would stay until the final whistle blew.
This week, the Punchers will welcome the San Saba Armadillos to the Puncherdome. San Saba has had a strong season thus far, and the matchup should be a great game for fans on both sides of the field. Play begins at 7:30 p.m.
