son 4-H is organizing a scavenger hunt/food drive for the Mason Food Bank on Sunday, October 21 at 3 p.m. Members will collect items to fill special Thanksgiving boxes (the Methodist Church donates the turkeys) for needy families in Mason. 4-H members need to call the Extension office at 347-6459 or email Kristy Powell at kmpowell@tamu.edu to sign up by Oct. 15th so we can divide into teams. We will meet at the Extension office and then load up in our teams to go door-to-door collecting items.

Members will get extra points for the Thanksgiving box items but any items you donate will be appreciated by the Food Bank. The special items needed for each family’s box are as follows: 1 can cranberry sauce, 1 can green beans, 1 can or package brown gravy, 3 Large Potatoes or box of Instant mashed potatoes, 2 large yams or 1 can sweet potatoes, 1 box or bag of stuffing mix, and a brownie mix or cookie mix.

To the community: Please call or email with your name, address, and phone number if you would like a 4-Her to come to your door (in town) during the food drive from 3-6pm. Items can also be dropped off at the Extension Office in the Historical Building at 505 Moody Street. Leave them outside the door if we are out “in the field”!

Other 4-H updates: the Mason 4-H Officer team is coordinating ordering 4-H t-shirts, so let us know if you would like to order one! They have picked lime green as the color and we hope to keep the cost below $15. The Food Drive will take the place of our regular October 4-H meeting. The Food and Fun Day for the Foods and Nutrition project will be held on Saturday, Oct. 20 from 9:30am- 1pm at the Grace Christian School. There will be a $5 fee per child to help cover food costs. 4-H members from 5-18 are welcomed (and you can still join 4-H for a $20 enrollment fee, ages 8-18 only) but kids from 5-8 have to bring their parents. And as always, any parents are welcome to attend! The Mason County Food Show will be held on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 1:30pm at the Mason County Library. Please call or email Kristy to sign up for the Foods and Nutrition project, and thanks to the wonderful leaders who are helping get this organized!
