Mason Continues Winning Streak With Victory Over San Saba
Wednesday, October 3, 2012 • Posted October 3, 2012

The Punchers welcomed the San Saba Armadillos to the Puncherdome on Friday night. As the rain increased throughout the night, the Punchers and the Dillos rewarded the crowd with a great night of football; but, the Mason team would continue its winning streak with a 40-14 victory.

The Punchers got the ball to start the game and began a slow, but steady, march down the field. It would finally be Rio Schmidt on the final one-yard run that would put Mason on the board. He followed up with the PAT and the score was 7-0 with 8:48 left in the first quarter.

San Saba had trouble moving the ball during the rest of the quarter; but, they also were able to hold the Punchers away from the goal for most of the period. With only 11 seconds left to play in the first quarter, Mason's Schmidt finally broke loose for a 43-yard touchdown run. He added the PAT and the score going into the second quarter was 14-0.

In the second quarter, the Dillos again had trouble mounting an offense that could get past Mason's "Fat Boys." Midway through the quarter, Schmidt made his third touchdown of the night on a 27-yard run, adding the PAT to put the score at 21-0.

With just one and a half minutes remaining in the first quarter, quarterback Elliott Bibb broke free and ran in a 30-yard score. Schmidt added the PAT to put the score at 28-0 going into the half.

During the half, the rainfall continued to increase, which would give the Dillos the break they had been needing. Just moments into the second half, the Dillos executed a long pass and Argote went the 64-yards for their first score of the night. The PAT was good and the score was 28-7 with 10:54 left in the third quarter.

A short time later, San Saba had possession of the ball; but, Mason kept up the push, keeping the Dillos deep in their own territory. They would finally force a safety from the Dillos, putting the score at 30-7 with 8:12 remaining in the third.

Only minutes later, possession had passed back to the Punchers and they took advantage of field position to have Rio Schmidt boot in a 29-yard field goal, putting the score at 33-7 with 5:12 remaining in the quarter.

Neither team was able to score again in the third quarter, and it would be mid-way into the fourth before another score would happen. This time, it would be the Dillos' Argote on their second touchdown of the night, with a successful PAT, putting the score at 33-14 with 6:11 left in the game.

Rio Schmidt would make yet another score, and the night's final touchdown, with 4:35 still on the clock. His 59-yard run, followed by the PAT, put the score at 40-14, where it would stay till the final whistle blew.

This week, the Puncher Varsity has an open schedule. The Junior Varsity will be playing the Brownwood Freshman team at Gordon Wood Stadium on Thursday, while the Junior High teams will be traveling to Big Lake to take on the Reagan County teams.
