Tourism is a strong and vital aspect to the Mason economy with the unique charms of a small town added to the plentiful Mason history to be shared. With only 41 motel rooms available in town (and many of those booked for service workers to our area), the private accommodations industry has blossomed. At the present time, there are over 40 B&B’s, Guesthouses and Lodges listed with the Mason County Chamber of Commerce. These accommodations are, for the most part, owned by individuals who may only live here part-time or by those who have a spare rooms or a house that is not otherwise in use, either inherited or purchased expressly for this purpose.
The guests choosing to stay in these private accommodations include the usual travelers passing through town or those tourists who have actually chosen Mason as a destination. Many of them find the information they need on the Mason County Chamber of Commerce website. Specific taxes collected on local lodgings are used to further promote tourism to our area.
These lodgings offer a bit of ‘home-style’ comfort not always found in a commercial unit. Single travelers sometimes seek out accommodations that are a bit more spacious in order to conduct business in a private setting. Travelers with families particularly find these lodgings attractive having the ability for everyone to stay under one roof, with kitchens for meal preparation and with living & dining rooms and outdoor seating areas for gathering.
Others arrive to attend weddings, retirement parties, local events and reunions. Several local accommodations are particularly well-suited (and marketed) as complete wedding venues or for workshops & seminars, from yoga weekends to painting classes to winery tours to ‘Girlfriend Get-Aways’.
Frequently, guests may include visitors for residents of our community, who may not have room for their friends and family at their own homes but want to offer a more personable setting for their guests. It is a perfect solution for ‘hosting’, without the usual obligation for continuous attention! “Empty nesters”, with downsized homes and lifestyles particularly are turning more and more to guesthouses for their visiting friends and families.
In several instances, local residents have chosen an area guesthouse to serve as a temporary home for themselves, while their own was being remodeled, renovated or repaired. Whether for a few days or several months, these lodgings have most likely saved frazzled nerves, impaired health issues and maybe even marriages!
The possibilities are endless…. and each of our area lodging proprietors would be happy to help find a solution to any need!
