Come to Old Yeller Day and Win Big!!
Wednesday, October 17, 2012 • Posted October 17, 2012

As anyone who has lived in Mason knows, Mason is inexorably linked with Old Yeller, the classic book by Fred Gipson. The beautiful statue in front of the library, the 1957 regional premiere, attended by Walt Disney, of “Old Yeller” (the movie) at the Odeon Theater in downtown Mason, and Old Yeller Day all pay tribute to the heart-warming story of the bond between a boy and his dog, set in the Texas Hill Country of long ago.

The Friends of the Library are once again presenting Old Yeller Day on Saturday, October 27th, on the courthouse lawn. The event, which begins at 10 AM, is free, and kicks off with a Pet Parade. After the parade, pets will be judged in four categories: Best Costume, Owner-Pet Lookalike, Best Trick, and Old Yeller Lookalike. Additionally, there will be a “Travis Lookalike” contest. The parade and contest will be emceed by Denwood Butler, and an impartial panel of judges will pronounce the winners. Reigning Cats & Dogs will be donating prize packages for first through third place in all four pet-related contests. Rich Zanetti, district manager of Nutro Pet Foods will be on hand with coupons and samples of Nutro, a premium pet food that is for sale at Reigning Cats & Dogs and the Mason Feed Store. Rich and Nutro have generously put up a fantastic prize for first place winners - free dog food for a year! Gift certificates for this will be included in the prize packages, so start teaching that old dog a new trick, get the creative costume juices flowing, or think about how you can get your pet to resemble you! This prize is worth over $500 to the lucky recipients!

Other pet-related parts of Old Yeller Day will be: local rescue groups will have adoptable pets available for a “meet and greet,” and a pet food drive will be conducted for the Mason Animal Shelter. Pet supplies will be collected throughout the day in the bed of the Newsoms’ 1927 Model T Roadster Pick-Up, which will be parked on the square. Make this a win-win - bring something to help the homeless pets, and take a shot at winning free dog food for a year! It doesn’t get any better than that!
