Sometimes, looking at the score of a game, there is no real indication of how good the contest really was. Such is the case with last Friday's match against the Ozona Lions when the Punchers walked away with a 43-6 victory.
It was an indicator of the battle that it took almost the entire first quarter before either team was able to score. Fortunately, it would be Mason on a 30-yard Elliott Bibb run. The PAT attempt was not good, and the score was 6-0 with 1:33 remaining in the quarter. It would stay there until shortly into the second.
The next score more closely resembled a soccer play. A punt attempt was fumbled by the Lions. The ball drifted toward the Mason goal before Ozona picked up the ball, and then fumbled it. Mason dove in and recovered the fumble, scoring in the process. This time, Mason ran for the extra two, and the score was 14-0 with 10:50 remaining in the half.
Ozona had been unable to put together a scoring drive during the early part of the game; but, they would finally be able to make a determined push midway through the quarter and finally score. With 6:44 left in the half, the score was 14-6.
Mason would push back against the Lions, finally scoring just before the half when Cody Wood took a pass from Bibb to score for the Punchers. The PAT was good, and as the game went to half, the score was 21-6.
During the second half, it was a battle of the defensive squads, and Mason would be victorious in that contest. Ozona was able to keep the Punchers away from the goal for most of the third quarter; but, they finally fell to the Puncher offense late in the period when Miguel Castillo intercepted an Ozona pass and ran 23 yards for a Mason touchdown. Schmidt's PAT was good, and the score was 28-6 with 3:55 of play left in the quarter.
Just a short time later, Mason would take possession of the ball from Ozona, and Rio Schmidt sprinted 66 yards for fifth Mason score of the night. Schmidt also ran for the extra points, and the score was 36-6 with 1:14 left to play in the third. Neither team would score again until the fourth and final period of play.
The Ozona defense and offense finally began to crumble in the fourth quarter. Mason's Raul Silguero scored a few minutes into the quarter, and that would be the last points on the board for the night. With the PAT added to the touchdown, the score was 43-6, and it stayed there for the last nine minutes of play till the final whistle.
This week, Mason will meet up with their old rival, the Junction Eagles in a home game. Play begins at 7:30 p.m.
