Little Punchers Win in Overtime to Advance to the Superbowl
Wednesday, November 7, 2012 • Posted November 7, 2012

The third/fourth grade Mason Puncher team traveled to Brownwood to take on the Brownwood Lions White Team at Gordon Wood Stadium. The Punchers had played the Lions White Team 2 times this season. With one loss and a win against the Brownwood Team this game was going to be a great one.

First quarter was very explosive as the Punchers kicked the ball to start the game. Defense held tight and the Lions turned the ball over on downs. Punchers marched right down the field and scored quickly to make it the first score of the ballgame. PAT failed and the Punchers led 6-0. On the kickoff the Lions took the ball at the 50 and ran the kick all the way back for a TD. PAT was good and the Lions took the lead 6-8. After a few turnovers from both teams the Lions scored before half with a failed PAT and that made the score 6-14 going into the half.

We told our kids that the second half was ours and that we were going to do whatever it took to win the game. Our kids did just that! Punchers received the ball after the half but the drive would stall and it was a turnover on downs. The Lions would also turn the ball over to the Punchers in the fourth quarter after a great defensive stand. The Punchers then put together an amazing drive to score. PAT was good and that tied the game at 14 all. Punchers would kick to the Lions and made yet another great defensive stop. The Punchers fought hard but were unable to put it in the end zone for the win.

OT would be decided by each team starting from the 10 yd. line. Both had 4 tries to score. Punchers took offense first and punched it right in for the score. PAT failed and that made the game 20-14 Punchers. Lions would start at the 10 yd. line and after 3 plays it was 4 down on the 4 yd. line. Lions called a TO and our kids came to the sidelines. This is it! This is for our season who wants to win??? Our kids had determination in their eyes and knew exactly what they needed to do. As they broke from the huddle on the sidelines it was all business for the Punchers as the Lions came out in the shotgun set, handed the ball off to the running back running right side. You could see our kid’s eyes and they were so focused on bringing the running back down before he could reach pay dirt and that’s just what they did. The Lions running back had nowhere to go as the whole defensive team made a great pursuit to the ball and drove the Lions running back out of bounds short of the goal line.

PUNCHERS WIN in dramatic fashion on a goaline stand to win the game 20-14 and advance to play in the Superbowl against the Bangs Dragons. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. at Early Longhorns Stadium in Early, Texas. Hope to see you all there!
