Friday night's meeting between the Mason Punchers and the Center Point Pirates turned out to be rather one sided; but, provided some great moments for Puncher fans.
Any game that begins with an 80-yard return of the opening kickoff is definitely going to end predictably. Raul Silguero's run brought the crowd to its feet. Rio Schmidt's PAT was good, and the score was 7-0 only fourteen seconds in.
Mason kicked to Center Point; but, on their second play of the game, they fumbled the ball. Marcuss Martinez then did what few linemen ever get to do as he made the 20-yard run across the goal for Mason's second score of the night. Schmidt's PAT was good, and the score was 14-0 with 11:34 left in the first quarter.
The Pirates were unable to leave Mason's end of the field on their possessions, and it would be only a few minutes before Mason would score again, this time on a pass from Elliott Bibb to Cody Wood. Scmidt kicked the PAT and the score was 21-0 with 7:42 remaining.
There was a brief possession by Center Point, followed by yet another Mason touchdown, this one, again, by Silguero on a 38-yard run, and again, by Schmidt's PAT, to put the score at 28-0 with 5:40 left in the quarter.
Center Point failed to secure the kickoff, Mason again took possession, and scored almost immediately on a 22-yard run by Bibb. The extra point attempt failed and the score was 34-0 with 5:20 left in the first quarter.
Coach Kade Burns began dialing back his team in an attempt to reduce the impact they were having on the Pirates. All the Junior Varsity players had been moved up to Varsity last week, so Burns was able to start testing some of their skills as the rest of the first quarter played out and the second quarter began.
In the second quarter, Schmidt would score twice. The first was a short run just a minute and a half in. His kick was good and the score was 41-0. The second score came only minutes later when Schmidt ran in a 57-yard touchdown and added the PAT to put the score at 48-0 with 7:24 remaining in the half.
With just one minute of play left in the half, Rylee Owen made his first Varsity touchdown after taking a pass from Bibb. The score going into the halftime Homecoming ceremonies was 55-0.
In the third and fourth quarter, the Punchers were playing with many of the promoted junior varsity acting in key positions. During the third, Center Point was finally able to gain some traction and to score twice. At the end of the third quarter, the score was 55-12.
The fourth quarter saw each time make one score each. Mason was first when Seth Hudson took a pass from Miguel Castillo. The extra point failed, and the score was 61-12 with 9:25 left in the game.
Center Point made the final score of the game half way through the quarter to put the final numbers of 61-18 up on the scoreboard.
This week, Mason has a bye in the first round of the playoffs (see playoff bracket on page 15). They will play the winner between Ganado and Three Rivers. Information on that game will be in next week's paper.
