Punchers to Scrimmage Ozona
Wednesday, August 13, 2008 • Posted August 13, 2008

After two gruelling weeks of two a day practices, the MHS Punchers will finally get a chance to guage their progress as they tangle with Ozona at the Puncherdome Saturday the 16th of August. The JV will play first at 9:00 a.m. with the Varsity to follow at 10:30 a.m.

KNEL 95.3 FM, the voice of the Punchers, will once again broadcast live from the Mason Puncher Club (MPC) booth, where they will also conduct coaches' interviews and tape sound bites of the players, to be aired in future broadcasts. KNEL sales representatives will also be on hand to assist any businesses who need assistance in securing commercial time for the 2008 broadcasts.

Prior to the Varsity scrimmage Coach Joy will address the parents and players of the Mason Youth Football program and the Mason Junior High program.

The Mason Puncher Club (MPC) will once again have the concession stand open and will be serving food fresh off the grill. If you attend, make it a point to stop by the MPC booth and check out all of the new 2008 Puncher merchandise. This would also be a perfect time to secure that Mason Puncher Club (MPC ) membership and get your name in the 2008 football program.

The Preseason scrimmage has gained in popularity as it has taken on the look of a live media event. It gives the Mason faithful a chance to rub elbows with the players, down some fresh food off the grill, and get your first look at our 2008 Punchers.

Last year's team was extremely young and received a baptism by fire. This year that will not be the case with 11 seniors, 15 juniors and only 3 sophomores making up the game day roster. High expectations have lent to spirited practices. There seems to be a new found chemistry among these young gladiators of the gridiron as they prepare for the season opener against Iraan, who is currently ranked at #18 in the state wide top 20 poll.

I spoke to the Iraan Booster President last week and he told me that even though they view Mason as the underdog in their season opener, they are not taking any chances and are planning to converge on ASU with two spirit buses. They also plan on having over seven hundred fans complete with war paint to attend the game.

Now I try not to be one of those “I told you so” guys. However, I warned everybody back at the spring athletic banquet that this one would have the feel of a playoff game in late November. Let’s all mark our calendars now and plan to attend, with the official dress code being, PURPLE WAR PAINT !!!!!
