Punchers Face Thorndale Friday
Wednesday, November 28, 2012 • Posted November 28, 2012

The Mason Punchers will face Thorndale this Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Marble Falls. We will be the HOME team and trust me, on a cool night, we will be glad we are. It shields us against the north wind and also affords us the luxury of having real seating with back support so no need to pack the stadium seats if you get there early enough.

Let’s talk a little about this year’s TEAM. The dynamics of this team are different from that of last year’s State Championship Team and here is a simple why. The road we faced last year to State was easy, excluding Ganado, and this year as was evident early against Three Rivers, this group had to fight it’s way 4 full quarters to make it out with a decisive win.

Remember last year in the playoffs, all games except for Ganado our 2nd team and even sometimes our JV got into the game mid third quarter and most of the 4th. I wish we could afford that this year but I personally think the road to Jerry’s world will be a test every week until we get there. There is another feature for this game that brings up an interesting conversation. Coach Burns came from Thorndale, and rest assured there are some varsity players that remain as well as assistant coaches before he left and came to Mason so that should throw a little fuel on the fire. Throw in the fact the Thorndale’s new Athletic Director/Head Coach Brent Brevard did interview in Mason and did not get the job and it just makes it even better.

The Thorndale crowd will be at Marble Falls in full support, trust me it’s going to be rowdy but hey that’s what we like here in Mason right?

Here is a fact of what this year’s TEAM has accomplished thus far. There are 76 teams in Class 1A Division 1 and we rank second in the State in scoring on offense, averaging 47 points per game. The only team that had outscored us up until this point was West Sabine and they just got routed by Mart last week so we will move into the # 1 spot this week on points scored.

Let’s talk a little about defense and remember last year, defense wins championships doesn’t it? Well our defense ranks NUMBER #1 in class 1A division 1 in points allowed giving up a total of 11 points per game.

We have been banged up a little throughout the year but this week excluding any injuries during practice we should be close to 100% and that comes at the right time. I expect a hard fought game this week in Marble Falls with the Punchers coming home with a victory...

The night will be perfect with temperatures expected in the mid to low 50’s and Marble Falls is not very far from here. Let’s all get out and continue to support this TEAM on their quest to defend their State Championship. GO PUNCHERS!
