Kambrey Hudson with the Mason FFA Chapter recently placed fifth in the Junior Prepared Public Speaking event during the Texas FFA Convention. The State Public Speaking Events were held in conjunction with the Texas FFA Association's 80th Annual State Convention on the campus of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. Kambrey competed with the topic "Rainwater Harvesting."
FFA Members competing at state must advance through district, are, and state semifinal rounds in order to be name State Finalist. Kambrey won the Hill District FFA Speaking Contest in Comfort in May and took first place honors at the Area VII FFA Convention in San Marcos the following week. The top twenty FFA members from all schools in Texas advance to the state competition.
FFA Speaking events are judged in three areas. The student must complete a cited research paper on their topic, present the topic as a speech, and answer questions from the judges. Points are added to determine the placing. During the state competition, the top twenty students compete in semifinal rounds. Ten students from two heats advance for the strenuous final competition to determine the winner.
A fifth place finish at state is a great accomplishment for one of our own Mason FFA members. Helping Kambrey achieve her success was Laura Austin with speaking skills and Kelly Guice with research and citation. Congratulations, Kambrey, on a wonderful year.
