The Arnold Art Gallery in Mason, Texas will host an exhibition of paintings by Neal Wilson with an opening reception and “Meet the Artist” on December 7 from 5:00-7:00. The artist will give a brief Gallery Talk about his work with opportunities for Q and A beginning at 5:30.
Neal Wilson received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and his M.F.A. in painting and drawing from the University of Texas at Austin. He joined the faculty at Texas State University-San Marcos in January 1971 where he taught for thirty-eight years.
His paintings have been exhibited in over one hundred one-person and group shows both nationally and internationally including Chile, Greece, and Sweden. His work has won numerous awards and is included in many private and public collections including the McNay Museum of Art in San Antonio and the Longview Museum of Art, Longview, Texas. His work is currently being shown in the Gallery Collection of La Posada de Santa Fe, in Santa Fe, NM.
About his work, Wilson says, “every work of art embodies a way of seeing..." and “just as I have my own way of seeing the world, so does the viewer. I invite the viewer to come to the work with an open mind and look first without questions, because in my experience a quiet eye is most likely to see the meaning of the work. The completed art is not about the artist and the viewer but the viewer and the art.”
He concludes, “ If I have learned anything about art, the most profound lessons have come from looking at it. Most of these insights have come without trying to understand the meaning of the work. For me, art is a visual experience and its meaning is contained in the experience. Art is mute. It tells you nothing but it shows you everything. One often says, “I see” to mean I understand. I hope in the end “you see”.
The public is invited to “see” Neal Wilson’s paintings in acrylic and watercolor at the Arnold Art Gallery through January 16 from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Monday through Saturday. The Arnold Art Gallery is a newly formed exhibition space celebrating Texas Fine Art. The Gallery is located at 118 Ft. McKavitt Street, in Mason across from the Courthouse.
