My First Deer Hunt
Wednesday, December 5, 2012 • Posted December 5, 2012

Provided by the Texas Brigades, I got to go on my Assistant Herd Leader hunt with five other guys. My hunt was located on the Flojo Ranch near Freer, Texas. My friends Justin, Dillion, Charlie, Jacob, and Tristan were there with me giving me pointers before I went into the stands because I’ve never been hunting before.

We got up at five in the morning and got ready to go to the stands. My instructor, Clark, lead me into a stand and we waited for the deer to show up. I was taking a little nap when Clark said, “Stayci, are you ready to shoot your first deer?” I looked out the window and there was a big 8 point right in front of me. I was getting ready to get my dad’s 243 when something scared him off. Clark told all the instructors about my deer and when I came back to the house the guys were like, “We heard about your deer, what happened?” I told them how he ran off and Charlie said I would get him tonight. Jacob got the first deer that morning and I watched him skin his deer. He said that he couldn’t wait until I got my deer that night and would help me skin him. All the guys said I would get him, I was excited because I really wanted to shoot my first deer.

Five o’clock came around and Clark and I went back to the same stand we saw the 8 point that morning. At six o’clock all these bucks came out! Clark was looking for a buck I could shoot and he picked a nice 10 point with a green tag in his ear. He told me to get my gun and I got it ready. I was very excited in nervous, must’ve been the buck fever! I was shaking and I to take a few quick breaths to steady my gun enough to get a clear shot. I think the buck saw me but right before he could run I shot him! I looked up and asked, “Did I miss?” Clark said, “No, you got him. It was a clear shot, good job!” I was really excited and we waited 15 minutes until we went to track him. We followed the blood track and we found him by some brush. He only ran 30 yards from where I shot him. Clark got the truck and we got him in the back and were off to the skinning shed. Dillion was already back because he shot a nice 8 point 30 minutes before me. He was really excited for me and helped me get him out of the back of the truck. Clark and Matt helped me skin my deer. He weighed 182 pounds and scored 127.9. For my first deer he was really big. Clark sent the pictures of my deer and me to the other instructors and they showed it to the guys. When they got back from their stands they came and saw my deer and were really jealous because none of their first deers looked like that.

I want to give a big thank you to the Flojo Ranch, Clark, all the instructors and the guys for making my first deer hunt memorable. I love my deer and I can’t wait to go hunting again! Thank you for such an unforgettable trip, I loved it!
