Operation Orphans, Inc. hosted 31 boys from six child-care facilites at Camp Gene Ashby November 30th and December 1st. Boys from Central Texas Children’s Home, Buda; Texas Baptist Home, Round Rock; Methodist Boy’s Home, Waco; Texas Baptist Children’s Home, Waxahachie; John Carl Smith Foster Home, Mullin; and Hughes Foster Home, San Angelo came Friday evening eager to enjoy the next day’s hunting activities. The kids come to Camp Gene Ashby, which is located on the banks of the Llano River south of Mason, Friday evening where they sign in, receive a safety and orientation meeting, visit the “Boot Room” where they get boots, and other clothing, and are free to play games, watch videos, and enjoy their meals and snacks. Soon it’s off to bed for the kids, chaperones, and volunteers in the Camp Gene Ashby dormatories.
The eager hunters and their guides hunt Saturday at area ranches. Ranches hosting kids were Bar 7 Ranch, Mason county; Nemec Ranch, Mason; Farmer Ranch, Mason; IX Ranch, Mason; Karl Ransleben, Gillespie; Northcutt Ranch, Mason; Patrick Loftin, Mason; Patti & Richard Myrick, Mason; 4R Ranch, Gillespie; Schwiening Ranch, Sutton; and YMCA Roberts Ranch, Kerr. Each child is matched with a guide to spend the day with. Guides of Operation Orphans, Inc. have successfully completed the Hunter’s Safety Course and have had a background check. The 31 hunters harvested 37 animals which included 22 whitetail does, 4 spikes, 7 management bucks, 1 aoudad, 1 hog, 1 turkey, and 1 fallow. Homes use the meat in their facilities or in their outreach programs. Volunteers who assist at the camp and those who serve as guides come from all across Texas to minister to the participating children. Operation Orphans, Inc. offers hunting and fishing activities at no cost to the participating children’s homes.
Members and sponsers of the Mason Boy Scouts who prepared the Saturday morning breakfast were Charles Martinez, Levi Hofmann, Samuel Martinez, Emanuel Martinez, Samuel Martinez Jr., Freddie Sapiean, and Wayne Carl Hofmann. Members and sponsers of the Mason 4-H who prepared the sack lunches for the hunters and guides to enjoy Saturday were Dakota Martin, Sherry Lehmberg, Nikia Hocksbergen, Ty Hocksbergen, Brynn Hocksbergen, Larin Hocksbergen, Brooke Powell, Kristy Powell, and Linda Mitchell.
The Fredericksburg Bakery supplied delicious baked goods and Mason Bottling Company provided softdrinks.
